Grand Rath Yatra kicks off in Puri with Lord Jagannath and Siblings amid 'Jai Jagannath' chants

Rath Yatra 2024

The world-famous Rath Yatra began on Sunday in Puri with Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, taking their places on their chariots in a grand procession amid chants of "Jai Jagannath." During the Pahandi ritual, the deities are brought from the temple to their chariots. Following tradition, the Sudarshan Chakra, Lord Krishna's celestial weapon, is placed on Goddess Subhadra's chariot, followed by Balabhadra's, Subhadra's, and finally Lord Jagannath's. After this ritual, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb offers prayers and ceremonially sweeps the chariots with a golden broom. The chariots are then pulled by devotees to the Gundicha Temple, the birthplace and garden house of Lord Jagannath, about 3 km from the main temple. Thousands of devotees gathered in Puri to see Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra and to pull their chariots named 'Nandighosh,' 'Taladhwaja,' and 'Darpadalan.' Filled with devotion, the devotees chanted "Jai Jagannath" and "Hari Bol" and danced joyfully. President Droupadi Murmu, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, along with other dignitaries, were present to witness the festival. This year's Rath Yatra is special as it coincides with Netra Utsav, Nabajoubana Darshan, and Rath Yatra on the same day, which last happened 53 years ago. Earlier in the day, President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and CM Majhi extended their wishes to the people for the occasion.
