Why Odisha is observing public holiday on September 9; know here

Nuakhai

On Monday, September 9, all banks and financial institutions in Odisha will be closed due to a public holiday.

This is because the major cultural festival 'Nuakhai' will be celebrated on Sunday, September 8, in Sambalpur, a city in western Odisha.

The Odisha state government has declared a holiday for all government, government-aided, and private schools, offices, and magistrate courts for Nuakhai.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued a notification about this.

What is Nuakhai?

"Nuakhai" means "eating new rice." It is a festival where people in Western Odisha celebrate the new harvest of rice crops.

Since Nuakhai falls on a Sunday, the government has announced Monday, September 9, as a public holiday.
